This page will tell you everything about the grand sea sponges of the deep oceans.

(Note that Yuki hasn't touched this page with her little "happies" and "fishies")

{That's what you think. - Yuki}

Although the serene sea sponge looks pretty, the pus-filled boils you get if you touch them aren't. Sea sponges are filled with poriferatoxins, which are toxic substances found in sponges. Strict warnings are given to divers to watch out for these innocent-looking creatures.

With their porous yet stable structure, sponges provide the perfect hotel for many different sea creatures. These include mollusks, worms, crustaceans,algea, fish, and even other sponges! Pictured left is an oceanic relationship between finger sponges and other sea creatures.

Although sponges are attached to the sea floor, they are meat-eaters like the sea anenome. Sponges eat by catching microorganisms and organic debris in tiny pores in their bodies. They are said to get their poisonous properties from the food they take in.

Sponges are made of layers and layers of cells. These cells can help pump water out of a sponge to filter it. Pictured on the right is a "yellow tube sponge" showing off its incredible pumping ability. The yellowish cloud of water is actually yellow vegetable dye that a researcher used to see how the sponge pumps water. Normally, it is impossible to tell when the sponge is pumping or not.
