Sirenians

There are only four unextinct Sirenians which are diviede into the two-suborders or 'families' of Sirenians:

  1. Dugong
  2. Trichechidae

There is only one living member of the Trichechidae the Dugong. There was another named Steller's Sea Cow, but that was hunted to exticntion. This animal used to live in the Bering sea where seal and otter hunters hunted it to extinction. Some things that are especially adapted to the Sirenians aquatic lifestyle they have no hindlimbs and no dorasl fin.Their bodies are shaped like a torpedo which helps them swim and glide through the water. they do have a few hairs but not very much they also have forelimbs that are paddleshaped which they use to maneuver or guide themselves when they swim. manatees have a rounded tail while a dugong's tail is more like a dolphins; v-shaped.

The numbers in the Sirenian Species have been going down for the past couple hundred years. The main cause of this depletion is humans, particularly manatees who are facing increased mortality rate due to collisions with boats, being crushed in the flood gates and getting tangled up in fishing nets. Dugongs have been facing the difficulties of shark and turtle hunting, dynamite fishing, oil spill, storms, cyclones, and being killed by Killer Whales and shark

Dugong and Manatees
  • Dugong
  • West African Manatee
  • Amazonian Manatee
  • West Indian Manatee
Cetaceans

There are two sub-orders of the Cetaceans (baleen whales, dolphins, porpoises, and toothed whales):

  1.  Odontoceti (toothed cetaceans)

  2. Mysticeti (baleen whales)

Some of the main differences between the two sub-orders are:

  • Mysticetes have baleen (the stuff they use to filter out krill from the waer when they swallow) and two blowholes whereas Odontocetes have only one blowhole and sharp teeth.

  • Another very big difference is how they locate there prey odoncetes locate their pray by echolocation while the mysticetes filter their food into their mouth with baleen.

there are also some major features that are the same:

  • All of the Cetaceans bodies are elongated and streamlined.
  • There foelimbs have been completley modified and changed into flippers
  • They don't have any type of nails.
  • They don't have external hindlimbs.

They all have fins though there are many different types of tail, dorsal, and flipper shapes here are some of the different ones and examples of what cetacean they are on:

Tails: V-shaped, Straight, Convex, and Concave (dolphins).

Dorsal Fins: Falcate, Rounded, Hump, Nubbin, Ridge, Finless, and Triangle (Killer Whale).

Flipper Types: Long, Spatulate, Pointy and Tapered (Dolphins), and Paddle like (Killer Whale).

Cetaceans have no external ear flaps, also their skin is usually smooth and sleek although a few species have short bristles on their head areas. Since cetaceans have no external earflaps it is extremely hard to locate where their ears are the location of there ears are right behind the eye on the side of the head, these 'ears' are actually holes the size of a pinhead. Blubber is also a common characteristic that all cetaceans have the thickness, however, depends on the species. This layer of blubber is found directly below the skin.

~* A Note On The Evolution Of Marine Mammals*~
Most scientists believe that Marine Mammals evolved from land mammals.
· Cetaceans- these are the most adapted to ocean life of the three orders. Scientists believe that the change started to happen about 55 to 60 million years ago. There are two sub-orders of Cetaceans, the mysticetes and the odontocetes. It is believed that they shared a common ancestor or a third sub-order called archaeocetes, which became extinct approximately 30 million years ago. The closest relative they have that is a land mammal is a hippopotamus.
· Sirenians- the origin of the Sirenians is a little fuzzy and missing some pieces to the puzzle. What we do know is that they evolved about 50 million years ago and evolved between the prehistoric shores of the Tethys Sea. Studies show they share common origins with the: aardvarks, hyraxes, and elephants.
· Pinnipeds-There is a disagreement between scientists to whether or not all three of the different classes of Sirenians share a common evolutionary origin. One view on this matter is that they diverged from a common bear like ancestor about 25 million years ago. Another answer is that they all evolved separately about 20 million years ago. There are many other beliefs and views out there and no one is quite sure about the truth.
